Main Topic

Metro Detroit WordPress Meetup is a group that’s been organizing events for the WordPress community for over 2 years. The group of volunteer organizers are composed of senior WordPress developers, entrepreneurs, social media strategists and more.

Every month features a guest speaker and topic of discussion. This month features Jim Luke, professor of Economics and the Creator of the Open Learning Lab at Lansing Community College.

The future of higher education is open – having students and faculty publish, create, learn, and write in public on the open Web. In the process, students are developing digital literacy/digital citizenship and creating their own identities and portfolios on the open Web. They become creators and publishers, not just passive consumers of news feeds and social media. Eventually they become a new generation of publishers on the Web.

Thirty universities nationwide have embraced programs called “Domains of One’s Own” so that faculty and students can create their own permanent websites and manage their own web hosting. LCC is the first community college in the nation to start its own Domains of One’s Own project, called OpenLCC.net.

Jim, the creator of the openLCC.net, will share some examples of the many different and interesting applications of WP that are being developed, as well as the challenges and opportunities they present.

Wordpress is easily the most commonly used content management system across the internet. The strength of WordPress is in its quick installation and the massive user and developer community that results in a vast array of plugins and enhancements for the platform.

This monthly meet up is a great opportunity for novice & experienced developers to network and learn about what’s going on in the Detroit WordPress community, and also for non-technical humans to find local talent.
